The JDA has particularly focused its expertise in the built environment on 2010 sector projects which included transit-oriented development such as implementing the infrastructure for the Bus Rapid Transit, support infrastructure around Coca-Cola Park Stadium in Ellis Park and Soccer City in NASREC, which are two main 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup venues.
In the wake of increased investment by the City of Johannesburg through the JDA, the private sector has responded by investing confidently in the Inner City of Johannesburg.
“The JDA alone can clearly not rejuvenate all areas of decay, hence the need to identify and recognise those (private and/or NGO) stakeholders who through their investments and effort are contributing to significant regeneration in the Inner City and elsewhere through the Halala Joburg Awards Programme” says Lael Bethlehem, Chief Executive of the JDA.
The awards are open to individuals and projects. This includes, but is not limited to, companies (from micro to multinational), consortiums, Public Private Partnerships, Joint Ventures, NGOs, CBOs and FBOs or their individual representatives. For 2010 there are seven categories into which projects and people may be nominated covering all the essential components that come together to create a world class African city.
The categories for 2010 are:
- Living Joburg: - "Not Houses But Homes" - Recognising residential projects that provide the best possible innovative, progressive and inclusive housing that addresses the needs of Inner City residents and supports the development of this community
- Working & Buying Joburg - "Creating A Business Destination" - Recognises innovative, exciting and striking commercial and retail developments that attract both provider and consumer to the city
- Relaxing & Playing Joburg - "The Recreation Destination" - Recognises creative and innovative use of the built environment to provide “The Recreation Destination” with adjudicators looking for daring use of buildings (new or existing) and exciting use of space to create a unique recreational experience
- Sustaining Joburg - "Green Buildings, Green City" - Recognises projects and individuals that have applied innovative, environmentally sound and sensitive approaches, utilisation and maintenance to built environment investment, regeneration and development in the Inner City
- Caring Joburg - "Supporting Joburg's Citizens" - Recognises the selfless and community-minded individuals, volunteer groups and organisations that create the 'caring heart' of the city. This category acknowledges those who deliver support services focussed in community development to all residents with a specific focus on the more vulnerable members of the community
- Believing in Joburg - The Stan Nkosi Achievement Award - "Joburg the home of Innovators, Investors and Implementers" - In honouring the late JDA Chairman, Mr Stan Nkosi, this category seeks to recognise those who display the same degree of commitment, similar developmental values and share his allegiance to sustaining the Inner City
- Conserving Joburg - The Colosseum Award - "Joburg Past, Present and Future" - Recognises exemplary work in conservation of heritage buildings in the Inner City that meets the renovation criteria as set out in the national and provincial heritage policies.
All nominations for the Halala Joburg Awards require an initial ‘Trigger’ nomination form to be fully completed. All the information on the nomination process is available on www.jda.org.za and www.joburg.org.za. Nominations open on 11 February 2010 and close on 19 March 2010.
