Urban Monitoring System for Braamfontein

It is an essential tool needed to guide the budgeting and allocation of City and Private sector resources. The system is supported through dedicated personnel trained to capture, action, monitor and resolve any urban service breakdowns.
UMS captures and monitors:
- criminal activities in an area, allowing for informed planning, development and implementation of crime prevention strategies
- information related to the assistance of the public by the Public Safety Ambassadors, thus allowing for a more accurate understanding of people movement in an area, which leads to targeted marketing plans and event management.
The benefits of UMS include:
- A Web-based visual mapping system
- Standard report terminology in line with the local authorities
- Easily accessible information available to CID board
- Plotting of comparative statistical information.
- Pre–defined reporting in exportable and compatible formats
- Communication tool between City and Private sector (pre-defined reports can be escalated electronically to regional representatives).
- Urban tool for capturing infrastructural layout
- Communication tool for circulation of information to property owners on events or City utility breakdowns.
The UMS has just been rolled out in the BID area. This allows real-time monitoring and mapping of all reported incidents in the area. The system captures all related info, as location, reference number, type of complaint as well as the time it takes to resolve.
It forwards the information, including crime and accidents, onto a schedule and a map, and this is copied to all persons who can take action on this information.
“Kagiso Urban Management (KUM) designed the system and it is being implemented in the Inner City and City Improvement Districts (CIDs), to improve service delivery,” says Hans Jooste of CJP.
