Nelson Mandela Bridge

This magnificent addition to Johannesburg's skyline is a fitting tribute to a living icon. The largest cable-stayed bridge in southern Africa is the centrepiece of the several million rand inner city renewal project and provides a breathtaking sight when lit up at night. The 295-meter bridge spans the main Braamfontein railway yards, forming part of the new link joining Braamfontein in the north and Newtown in the south. Former president, Nelson Mandela, officially opened the bridge on 20 July 2003, as part of his 85th birthday celebrations.

The bridge is aesthetically positioned between two other major developments in Johannesburg's cultural arc - the Newtown Cultural Precinct and Constitution Hill in Braamfontein - carrying two lanes of traffic and two sidewalks for pedestrians.
