By improving the facilities at the theatre the Civic aims to establish itself as a world-class venue for live entertainment on its four stages. The Civic Theatre aims to provide a platform for African performers, musicians, directors, designers and technicians to develop and improve their skills through sponsorships so that productions that are staged are financially sound, ensuring a constant source of income for the theatre. In August 2001, former president Nelson Mandela bestowed the honour on the Johannesburg Civic Theatre of giving his personal approval to the re-naming of the theatre's main stage. The complex now proudly boasts of housing the only Nelson Mandela Theatre worldwide.
